The Gates Mills Fire Department was established in 1927 when council passed an ordinance "To provide for establishment and organization of a Village Fire Department." The first Village fire engine was a 1917 Chevrolet purchased in 1927 from the American LaFrance Company for approximately $850 and was housed in the first station located on the corner of Epping Road and Main Street. The department operates as a volunteer organization whose members are on a paid on call status.

The Fire Department currently operates out of one station located behind Village Hall and proudly protects approximately 2500 people living in an area of 8.8 square miles consisting of mainly single-family residential dwellings. Also, throughout the Village are various commercial and institutional facilities requiring yearly fire safety inspections.

Currently the department consists of 26 members (4 Paramedics, 7 Emergency Medical Technicians) providing fire protection, hazardous materials, search and rescue, and vehicle extrication services. Various members of the department also serve on a variety of specialized area teams that include Fire Investigation, Technical Rescue, and Dive Rescue. The department apparatus consists of 2 Engines, 1 Tanker, and 1 SUV Command Vehicle, all of which carry EMS supplies for the certified Paramedics and EMTs use.

Presently, the Village Fire Department has reciprocal agreements with the surrounding communities to provided additional personnel and equipment in the event of a large scale incident. One such agreement is with the Chagrin Southeast Hazardous Materials Team to provide services to the Hillcrest area for a hazardous material response.

Fire Department members train twice per month. Click on Calendar of Events for department training dates and times.
